IMSI-MW SUBJECT: Minutes of the Fort Sill Family and Community Team Session (SillFACTS) , 1 September 201 7 (2) National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month (COAM). Point of contact is CPT David Korb, (580) 558-2825. One in three American children are overweight or obese . Basic health aspects start day one in a child's life. The choices we make as children can have a long term effect. Our goal is to get the basic concepts of health information to children as early as possible. Many illnesses are a result of a lifetime of bad choices. We have partnered with Family and MWR and the USO on Fort Sill for activities during the month of September to promote COAM. b. Army Partnership with Local Areas Schools (APLAS) & Buffalo Burger Cookout. Point of contact is Ms. Brenda Spencer-Ragland, (580) 442-3001 . Ms. Spencer-Ragland announced the APLAS Signing Ceremony is 11 September, 1030, at the Fort Sill Conference Center. Key leaders will be there to sign our agreement with 17 local schools. Ms. Spencer-Ragland said as part of our Community Health Promotion Council (CHPC), statistics show that twenty-one percent of fourth grade children are overweight or obese, which is in keeping with the national trend. Unfortunately when we look at our students in the local area schools, the average is 44 percent, with one outlying school at 61 percent. The Commanding General has approved that as we go forth with our agreement with local schools, our focus will be on physical activity and solid nutritional behaviors. Our goal is to try and reverse this trend of childhood obesity. Only two out of ten high school seniors is physically ready for military service. Ms. Spencer-Ragland announced this year is the 36 th Annual Buffalo Burger Cookout. The event is 23 September 2017 , 1100 to 1500, at Co-Op Park behind New Post Chapel. The free event is open to the public, so come out and enjoy free burgers, music, and fun activities for the whole family . c. Oktoberfest. Point of contact is LTC Thomas Groborsch, (580) 558-0359. Come out and enjoy a German tradition with authentic German food and beer at the 2017 Oktoberfest event on Fort Sill. He said he was born and raised in Munich, and he thanked Family and MWR for sharing a piece of his culture with authentic German food. Come celebrate Oktoberfest on 29 September 2017 , 1600 to midnight, at the Patriot Club. The Keg Tapping ceremony is at 1800. There will be a kid ' s zone with face painting, and a German Backerei with home baked goods will be hosted by some Family Readiness Groups (FRG) as a fundraiser for their FRGs . d . Suddenlink Update. Point of contact is Ms. Tamika Bell, (580) 678-0553 . Suddenlink has increased its speed, and they now have 50, 100, and 150 megabyte service available. Three years ago they lost the Viacom channels, but they will get them back on 26 October 2017 . Suddenlink now has technicians installing on Saturdays from 0800 to 1700. If one customer calls in a trouble call through the call center and it's escalated, they will they will send out a truck. In the past they would only send a truck when there was an outage. e . Workforce Oklahoma. Point of contact is Mr. James Taylor, Workforce Oklahoma, 580- 357-3500 . The Lawton Workforce Center operated by Oklahoma Employment and Security Commission (OESC) is open Monday through Friday from 0800 to 1700. Our main focus is connecting employers with job seekers, and all our services are free . We have 97,000 job seeker accounts, and 82 percent of our customers entering employment through OESC remained employed after six months of placement. We connect with and provide opportunities such as hiring events and job fairs. There ' s a job fair coming up on 14 September 2017 , 1030 to 1430, 2
